We have had a few customers over the past weeks ask about pipe free or pipeless filtration systems for their Compass Pool. We see several companies starting to offer this solution, we put in plain English the pros and cons of these systems.<\/p>\n

Firstly,\u00a0lets\u00a0get some myths\u00a0out the\u00a0way. There\u00a0is\u00a0no such thing as a pipe free filtration system. Just one that\u2019s all contained in one underground box. Within this box is contained a pump, a cartridge filter or bag filter and sometimes an electric heater joined with pipes. If you would like another form of heater other than electric (that we never recommend as a primary heat source due to the\u00a0running costs<\/a>) you will need to run\u00a0the\u00a0pipe work to the heat pump or boiler. This is usually done in a trench, just as\u00a0in\u00a0a conventional filtration system, as you don\u2019t want it stuck next to\u00a0your\u00a0pool making noise and generating cold air! We always recommend that the plant room is located away from the pool as you\u00a0want to avoid\u00a0the noise from the pumps near your swimming experience.\u00a0\u00a0Furthermore,\u00a0you\u00a0should\u00a0place them above ground to prevent the risk of the units flooding with high groundwater –\u00a0an issue we have\u00a0all experienced with the recent wet winters.<\/p>\n

Probably the most important factor when designing a swimming pool filtration system is the electrical safety in and around the pool.<\/p>\n

In essence,\u00a0you\u00a0cannot\u00a0put any mains voltage equipment within 2m of the pool itself\u00a0(for the same reason you\u00a0cannot\u00a0bring a mains\u00a0voltage appliances into the bath). When the pool equipment is attached to the pool itself in an underground box.\u00a0you are running a 230v pump and control panel below the waterline with just a piece of plastic to separate it. One of the main serviceable items of a pool filtration system is the pump seal that wears out approximately every 3 years. Once this fails,\u00a0this unit will fill with water risking electrocution.\u00a0At the very least, one would hope that the system is protected by an RCD however these are by no means\u00a0fullproof\u00a0either.<\/p>\n

A conventional filtration system designed to both SPATA (Swimming\u00a0Pool and\u00a0Allied\u00a0Trades\u00a0Association) \u00a0and ISPE (Institute of\u00a0Swimming\u00a0Pool\u00a0Engineers) standards will suck out the water from one end of the pool, filter, clean, heat and treat before returning\u00a0to the opposite end of the pool\u00a0– a bit like a river bed. Logically,\u00a0this makes\u00a0perfect\u00a0sense as there are no dead spots or areas of stagnant water\u00a0in which\u00a0that\u00a0bacteria and\u00a0algae can\u00a0breed\u00a0and\u00a0this\u00a0also\u00a0eliminates the issue of cold water spots.\u00a0For this reason you will not find a\u00a0Spata<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0ISPE<\/a>\u00a0member offering a pipeless filtration system\u00a0as\u00a0the standards can not be met with the water being sucked and pushed from the same place. Whoever you choose to buy a pool from, whether its\u00a0Compass or otherwise, we always\u00a0recommend\u00a0they are a SPATA Member.<\/p>\n

\"pipelessfiltration\"<\/a>
\nGoing back to the filtration system itself.\u00a0In a pipeless system,\u00a0due to the size\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0filtration pod,\u00a0most utilise a cartridge or bag filter instead of a sand filter. Whilst most will perform adequately you\u00a0need to\u00a0budget for the cost of filters that will need regularly changing and cleaning instead of the simple backwash process. Compass\u00a0do offer\u00a0a cartridge system but only\u00a0if\u00a0coupled with a cyclone pre-filter to reduce the cleaning frequency and prolong the life of the filter. While true that cartridge filters,\u00a0in general,\u00a0do filter down to a finer micron level the new\u00a0supermircron\u00a0filtration system with sand filter now filters down to the same fine level.<\/p>\n

This fine level of filtration helps reduce the amount of chemicals used, but never eliminates them, for 2 reasons.\u00a0Firstly,\u00a0a filtration system can not kill bacteria transfer from one body to another through the water.\u00a0Secondly,\u00a0external factors\u00a0affect\u00a0the\u00a0pH\u00a0in\u00a0your pool (rain and body contaminates, perspiration urine etc) if they\u00a0pH\u00a0is wrong it will corrode heat pumps and damage plastics, not to mention sting your eyes\u00a0an issue\u00a0that is often blamed on chlorine. Both of these need adjusting with a chemical.\u00a0Sometimes salt is one of these (sodium chloride) split into its elements electronically, that Compass offers.<\/p>\n

Now,\u00a0lets\u00a0address\u00a0the\u00a0pipes\u00a0themselves.\u00a0Some ‘pipe-free’ retailers will whip up scare tactics to try to sell themselves.\u00a0Historically,\u00a0pool pipes were solid inflexible things delivered in 3 meter lengths. This made\u00a0them\u00a0susceptible to cracking with ground movement with\u00a0a weak point\u00a0at every joint. Compass today have moved forward\u00a0– we run\u00a0flexible pipes in a single length to eliminate the risk of cracks in pipe work. These pipes are usually utilised by so called\u00a0‘pipe-free’\u00a0systems between the filter pod and the heat source (usually a heat pump)!<\/p>\n

One key point a ‘pipe-free’\u00a0retailer\u00a0will market is the reduced head loss.\u00a0Head loss is the friction generated by the pipe run.\u00a0Whilst\u00a0this is true to a certain extent,\u00a0the design of the system can reduce this to a minimum. Firstly by using\u00a0oversized\u00a0pipes employed on all Compass Pools\u00a0and\u00a0secondly, our optional variable speed pump will make a saving above and beyond those using a conventional pump by running the pump only at the necessary speed required at\u00a0any particular\u00a0time.<\/p>\n

Running costs on a pipeless filtration system\u00a0(or any pool for that matter) are an important consideration. Where the water is being sucked and pushed\u00a0from the same location, in order to help the poor natural circulation, often a larger sized pump is installed to try to throw the water\u00a0further.\u00a0The flip side of this is obviously the running costs to\u00a0achieve the extra water flow. Pump sizes can be anywhere up to 1.5kw\u00a0– that is the equivalent of\u00a015\u00a0100w light bulbs (no longer sold in the UK due to their energy demands).<\/p>\n

Another scare tactic used by some competitors is the\u00a0amount of\u00a0wasted water generated though backwashing for those on a water meter. The backwash process will generate approximately 500L of water. Looking at a water bill, most water authorities will charge in the region of \u00a31.20 per m3 (1000L) thus a backwash will cost you about 60p. During the average swimming season you will do this every 2 weeks. Giving a total cost of \u00a30.60 x 12 = \u00a37.20. Compare this to the filter cost on a pipe free filtration system, normally replaced annually at a\u00a0costs\u00a0in excess of \u00a340. While the sand in your filter will need changing every 5 yrs (\u00a350), the optional glass system will last indefinitely.<\/p>\n

Lighting in a pool adds hugely to the look of your new pool at night and careful consideration is taken to the placement of the lights themselves to ensure an even light within the water. They will normally be spaced evenly along the long side of the pool wall, on the side least visible. This is so that you don\u2019t see the light source that can dazzle you and just see the glow of the pool at night. These are normally done in energy saving led pool light or a multicoloured variety. On a pipeless or single pod unit filtration you are limited to one light positioned where the filter unit is\u00a0located and it\u00a0has to be switched at that location.<\/p>\n

Whist\u00a0pipe free filtration systems are considerably cheaper to\u00a0install,\u00a0we strongly\u00a0believe the benefits of a full specification filtration system\u00a0far\u00a0outweigh\u00a0the potential cost\u00a0saving\u00a0given the importance of clean, safe pool water, with a simple easy maintenance procedure. Furthermore,\u00a0there are no proprietary parts that could become obsolete or expensive to replace.<\/p>\n

At the end of the day, the majority of these pools are sold by salesmen and marketers who are franchisees \u2013 but they are not engineers. They make healthy profits selling a very basic system with high margins.<\/p>\n

We challenge anyone who is considering a pipe free filtration system to ask for a demo of the filter cleaning procedure on a pipe free filter then ask the same<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
